Trash talk story about Ames and Tiger

Tiger delivers "smack down" on Stephen Ames

Stephen Ames foolishly let slip some smack talk before his match
against Tiger Woods in the World Match Play Championship. When asked of
his chances against Tiger, Ames said with a smile, "Anything can happen
... especially where he's hitting the ball."

Sure, Ames was probably kidding, but Tiger later heard about the
comment, and didn't take too kindly to it. Instead of smack talk, Tiger
gave a smack down on Ames, winning the first 9 holes (with 7 birdies).
The rout ended after the 10th hole -- which is the soonest you can end
an 18 hole match. Next.

Advice to all other golfers in the world: Do not ever joke about Tiger,
or let your caddie write "Tiger who?" on his cap (see here). Tiger's
got a great sense of humor -- off the course. On the course, he's
ferocious. Remember Tiger's the same guy who thought Steve Scott's
girlfriend (his caddy) had giggled at Tiger, which riled Tiger to a
comeback victory at the U.S. Amateur at Pumpkin Ridge. For all we know,
Scott's girlfriend could've just been a sweet girl, enjoying the
moment. But Tiger will use any little thing to get motivated. So don't
get him mad. He will crush you. R.I.P, Stephen Ames.

It was a real demolition. Ames was so upset by it that he won the TPC
the next month (while Tiger finished 22nd). So let that be a lesson to
all golfers. Don't dare say anything about Tiger that wouldn't be heard
on a normal CBS telecast, or you'll get yours.

Thanks for the tip. The next time Tiger calls me for a game, I'll have to
remember to cool it with the trash talk.

PS: This must be the 99th time you posted this much ado about nothing. Isn't
it about time to stop beating the dead horse?

If TIger can turn it off and on like that, how does he ever lose? I
think Ames is right to needle him a little. He puts on his pants one
leg at a time like the rest of us.

RIP? Ames just won the Players, and Tiger was in the field. Get real.

Too bad golf isn't a contest to see who can dressed in the locker room the
fastest.

When I first heard that expression I was a boy who sat down to put on
my pants - two legs at a time. So the expression didn't makes sense
to me.

Trash talk story about Ames and Tiger
I have many reasons to like Stephen Ames but I just can't bring myself to be
in his camp. He's one of those aloof personalities that tries hard to come
across as a wit, but cannot pull it off. I suspect he's a silver-spooner
that never quite fit in. Nice golfer, though.

Towards the end of the Masters 3rd round there was a possibility of an
Ames-Woods final round pairing. Too bad it didn't happen. Would've been
interesting...

I still don't know why anyone made such a big deal about what Ames
said. It wasn't trash talk; it just came out wrong. The guy who went
out of his way to deliberately challenge Tiger was Allenby, Tiger's
opponent after Ames, and nobody mentions it. He chose to wear Tiger's
"power" colors, black slacks and red shirt, for the match.
